I got a free pineapple today from a guy named either "Wayne-o" or “Bueno" at Maui Surfboards. He sold me some snorkel gear, told me all about Save Honolua Coalition, gave we a water testing kit, and sent me on my way. Sweet! I’m working to help the local ecosystem already.
Honolua is one of the most beautiful parts of Maui, in my opinion. It has the high drama of lush cliffs plunging into the ocean, cerulean waves crashing onto lava rocks, and trade winds whipping everything around for good measure. I took Kaya (means weed, not ocean, Dave tells me) to an amazing secluded beach in Honolua today. We had to drive down a crazy bumpy dirt road to get there and the only sign marking it was a little rock that said “use 4x4”. We made it down the hill safely and finally found a beach where there were no people and I could lie on my blanket and watch the dog run around and play in the surf in peace. Sadly, she hurt a paw after a while and we had to leave a little earlier than planned. I didn’t get a good picture of the beach today because my camera died, but here’s a shot of the area:
It was funny to learn of the Coalition after such a lovely morning (and upsetting to learn that folks would think of ruining such a pristine, stunningly beautiful area). I will test some water at Napili Beach on my dog walk tomorrow. The Coalition wants to show how building tons of gated mansions will not only keep most of us from enjoying the area, but will also further damage an already hurting coral reef and ecosystem. Hopefully it works...money is a powerful opponent.
