‘Iao Valley

Today I got ambitious and took Kaya for a drive to the other side of the island (and we didn’t get lost!)  We visited the ‘Iao Valley, which I have wanted to see for a long time.  It was kind of crazy because I had to drive past all these giant water/firefighting trucks.  Maui catches on fire a lot...it’s pretty dry in many spots.  So we passed that commotion and headed for the giant, green mountains up ahead.  It was shady and full of trees and at least fifteen degrees cooler, but most of all it was stunningly beautiful!

There was a nice, refreshing stream where Kaya went for a dip.  Had I known, maybe I would have brought my bathing suit.  I guess it pays to always carry a bikini around here!

After an easy hike/walk and cooling off in the stream, we headed toward the ‘Iao Needle, a phallic volcanic formation and the site of Maui’s most violent battle, back when King Kamehameha I was fighting to “unite” (or dominate) all of the islands.  Of course.

It was nice to get out and explore today and to leave the house hunting behind for a moment.  We have a sublet for the rest of the month -- a place that belongs to a pretty cool couple with a sweet little girl.  Hopefully we can hang out when they return.  Dave and Porter arrive in two days.  Finally!!!

Aloha,
Jen
