A Plague O’er the House!

Aloha, friends!
I have many good reasons for not blogging as of late, including: 1. my camera was dead (and what good is a blog post without photos?) and 2. I had the Maui plague and didn’t want to whine too much about coughing and sinuses and exhaustion.  As of about yesterday, it seems like I might be feeling better (knock on bamboo).  Alas, Dave has begun coughing and feeling sluggish today...not a good sign.

In other plague-like news, poor Porter Brown was chomped on by a neighbor’s dog last week and I had to take him to the vet for stitches.  I, who never thought animals and humans should co-habitate, found myself alarmingly upset as I drove around the mountains, toward the center of the island where the vet is located.  Porter wrapped his chin around my arm in a little chin hug, which helped quite a bit.  He has a couple of pretty nasty holes in his front leg, now sewn up and recovering slowly.  I actually had to take him back to the vet today because he was licking his wounds like crazy and it seemed like they were getting worse.  Fortunately, the vet knew just what to do:  she put a “trophy husband” t-shirt on him, taping the arm holes tight around his legs and tying it in the back.  Now he can’t lick his leg and he has a stylish t-shirt to wear around the house.  Oh, man...I wish I could upload the pictures!

Launiupoko beach, looking up.
My camera seems to be working now, thanks to a new battery, but I am having downloading issues.  It’s telling me “one minute” for more like ten minutes, and I just don’t have time to figure it out right now.  Perhaps on a non-school night sometime soon...  In the meantime, here’s a nice palm tree shot I took at the beach before the plague robbed me of the month of October.

Speaking of which, it’s strange to have Halloween in the tropics.  It’s extra slutty because it’s not cold enough for people to want to be fully clothed, but it’s also just weird.  I couldn’t get into it this year.  We did have a lovely Sunday, though.  We started with a nice, quiet morning at home, followed by some snorkeling and beach naps, and a trip to Braddah Ben’s for tacos!  I can not say enough how much we love the taco guys.  (Thanks again, Corinne and Matt, for the hookup!)  If you visit us, I promise there will be mind blowing fish tacos involved.  If the sea turtles and water falls don’t convince you, the tacos surely will.  So yeah...nice, quiet Sunday followed by teacher planning and an early bed time.  We are so exciting!

Dave’s dad is with us this week, which is a lot of fun.  I had off work today, so he and I went to The Gazebo for yummy, beach front brunch at Napili Cove.  This cove is one of my favorite beaches for snorkeling with sea turtles, and there are usually a few tiny, gentle waves rolling in.  But today was CRAZY!  I swear, the waves were at least ten feet, consistently crashing on the lava rocks.  The surfers and boogie boarders looked like ants out there.  Holy north swell!  For many, this means the surfing is finally getting started.  Alas, for me, ten foot waves mean I am watching from the shore.  It was pretty cool, though.  I can’t wait until the really, really big waves come (like 25-70 feet at the famous Jaws).  The sounds, alone, are incredible.

Believe it or not, my first ever pina colada.  Amazing!
I just realized I will be coming to the East Coast in about six weeks for a holiday visit!  It’s exciting to think about, and also kind of strange because time just sort of stands still here.  The best clue I have about what is going on in the rest of the world is when catalogs arrive and the ladies are wearing sweaters, hats, scarves, and gloves.  I wonder if I’m going to stop aging, now that I am forever stuck in August, ’11.  Doubt it.  Anyway, I’m excited to come back East, put on some socks, and see some of my favorite peeps :o)

Until then, I hope everyone is enjoying fall and staying warm.
xoxo
Jen
